Properties and applications of nitrile butadiene rubber

2024-10-22 Leave a message

Nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is a synthetic rubber composed of butadiene and acrylonitrile, which has good oil resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance. It is mainly produced by low temperature emulsion polymerization, and because it contains a strong polar CN group, it has excellent stability for aliphatic oils and gasoline. The acrylonitrile content has great influence on the performance of NBR. The acrylonitrile content of universal nitrile rubber is between 15% and 50%, and if the acrylonitrile content increases to more than 60%, it will harden, similar to leather, and no longer has rubber properties.

Nitrile rubber has excellent oil resistance, which makes it widely used in the manufacture of oil-resistant rubber products. It can be used to make products such as resistant tubing, tapes, rubber diaphragms and large oil capsules. In addition, nitrile butadiene rubber is also used to make a variety of oil-resistant rubber products, oil-resistant gaskets, gaskets, bushings, flexible packaging, soft hose, printing rollers and cable rubber materials because of its good water resistance, air tightness and bonding properties. About 78% of the structure of nitrile butadiene rubber is trans, which is related to its performance. With the increase of acrylonitrile content, the polarity of NBR is enhanced, the chain flexibility is decreased, the interchain interaction force is increased, the double bond content is decreased, and the saturation degree is increased. This change results in a series of performance changes, including increased oil resistance, air tightness and abrasion resistance, while processability and cold resistance are reduced.

Nitrile butadiene rubber is usually prepared by polymerization. The specific steps include the reaction of nitrile monomer with carboxyl group copolymer, by controlling the reaction conditions and adding initiator to achieve polymerization reaction, so as to form carboxy-terminated nitrile liquid rubber. Although nitrile butadiene rubber is relatively safe under normal circumstances, appropriate safety measures need to be taken during use. For example, appropriate protective clothing and gloves should be worn to avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhaling its vapor or dust, should be used in a well-ventilated place. In case of contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical help.

Nitrile butadiene rubber is an excellent synthetic rubber with excellent oil resistance and other physical and mechanical properties. It is used in a wide range of applications, from automotive seals to building waterproofing materials to special coatings. Nevertheless, it is also necessary to pay attention to safety measures during use to avoid possible hazards.
